St. John's Gospel - Chapter 5

THE POOL OF BETHESDA

Jesus went to the market place in Jerusalem, where there was a Pool called Bethesda.  A lot of sick people came there daily, because they knew that if they could step into the water of the pool when it was moving (troubled), they would get healed.  An Angel came down at a particular time and troubled the water. It was their belief that the first one that stepped into the pool, after the water was troubled by the Angel, would be healed and it was so. 

When Jesus went there, He saw man who had an infirmity thirty and eighty years.  Jesus asked him if he believed that he will be healed one day, and that man replied Him saying that before he could step into the water, someone else got ahead of him.  Marveling at his faith, Jesus said Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.  And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked.  Since it was a Sabbath Day, the Jews said unto him that was cured, that it was not lawful for him to carry his bed on the Sabbath.  He said that Jesus who healed me, told me to take up my bed, and walk. 

THE JEWS WERE FURIOUS BECAUSE JESUS HEALED HIM ON A SABBATH DAY

Since that time, the Jews started persecuting Him and sought to slay him.  They were even more angry when Jesus said that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.  Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things so ever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.  Further He added that as the Father raises up the dead, even so the Son will raise the dead.  Then He said that the Father will not judge any man, but had committed all judgment unto the Son. 

Jesus added that all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father.  He that honors not the Son honors not the Father which hath sent him.  Then He said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

• Jesus demonstrated that He was the Son of God

• Jesus Healed the Sick Man who was at the Well of Bethesda

• Jesus emphatically stated that his father had sent Him and that he could do whatever his Father in Heaven could do. 

• Jesus said whoever hears His words and believes them will have everlasting life.
